How to run a website project smoothly

The thought of getting a new website built might fill you with dread and make your blood run cold.

All that time and effort you’re going to need to spend on it, the difficult decisions about what to include (and leave out), having to keep an eye on deadlines and budget…the list goes on.

We’ve been designing and developing websites from our base in Sussex for over 20 years, and over that time we’ve fine-tuned our process to make sure your web project runs smoothly, on time, and with the minimum of disruption to your business.

Mark Vaesen at Tomango writing notes

1. Scope

We start with the simple questions; Why do you need a website? What’s its main purpose? How much money should you invest in it and what return will you get from it?

The most successful websites are the ones that fit perfectly into a wider marketing strategy. We’ll spend time assessing where your website fits in, so we can make good decisions together about what to include and what to leave out.

2. Planning

A poor planning process (or even worse, a complete lack of one), means there’ll probably be a misunderstanding somewhere further down the line, causing frustration and delays.

Our experienced team will put together a detailed project plan document and work through it with you to make sure you’re happy with it. Everyone involved in the project can refer back to this blueprint later to avoid any confusion or misunderstandings.

3. Copywriting and content

In our experience, you’ll find writing the content for your new website will be one of the most painful and time-consuming parts of the project. You’ve got your day job to do – fitting in 30-40 hours of copywriting is just another task you could do without.

We include content writing by our professional copywriters in all our website projects; which means you not only save time (and pain), but the end result will be much better, too.

4. Design

We’ll present designs for the key pages of the website to you – complete with the copy, so you can see what it will really look like – and explain our thinking behind the design.

After we’ve discussed your feedback, we’ll make any tweaks to the website design before presenting it to you again. Once everything’s been agreed, our designers will liaise with our developers so they’ve got everything they need to start building the site.

5. Development

When the design’s been agreed, our developers start work on building the site. Working alongside the designers, they make sure the website’s pixel-perfect and matches the project plan document.

Your site will be coded properly for optimum speed, developed to be as readable to search engines as it is to humans and to be fully responsive, giving your customers the best user experience, whatever device they’re using.

6. Testing

A draft website is developed, fully populated with the content and tested thoroughly by our in-house team before we deliver it to you. We go through each and every page to check it matches the original design and that all the features and functionality work as expected and under stress tests.

Because we’ll have followed such a tight process and shared progress with you through the planning, design and development stages, at this point the only checking you’ll need to do is minor, saving you valuable time and energy.

7. Launch

When the final site’s been approved, we’ll make the necessary preparations for making it live and handle the whole process for you.

There’s a lot to think about, and it’s easy to miss something if you rush it, so we’ve developed a pre-launch checklist and over the course of 48 hours make sure everything’s ticked off before we push the button.

We’ll check in with you at one, two and four weeks after launch day to make sure everything’s going to plan and, of course, we can start implementing your post-launch digital marketing strategy for you.
